Minecraft Potion Brewing Chart

Pick the potion you want and the chart draws the path backwards — water bottle, base, ingredient, modifiers — one step at a time.

Modifiers

Redstone and glowstone are mutually exclusive — turning one on turns the other off, because in game they overwrite each other. Potions with no level II leave the glowstone button greyed out, and potions with no extended form — the instant ones and the four trial-chamber potions — leave redstone greyed out.

How Minecraft brewing works

Every recipe on this brewing chart is built in a brewing stand, three bottles at a time. Water bottles go in the three bottom slots, the ingredient goes in the top slot, and the stand consumes that one ingredient across all three bottles — so brewing three potions costs exactly what brewing one costs.

The stand burns blaze powder in the left-hand fuel slot. One blaze powder covers 20 brewing operations, and an operation is one ingredient going in, not one bottle coming out. A full chain — nether wart, then the effect ingredient, then a modifier — spends three of those twenty.

Order only matters in one direction: brew the base first, then the effect, then any modifier. You cannot add sugar to a water bottle and get swiftness later.

The base potions

A water bottle on its own does nothing. Four things can be brewed straight into one:

Redstone, glowstone and gunpowder

Three modifiers change a finished potion, and two of them fight each other.

Redstone dust extends the duration and leaves the effect at level I. Glowstone dust raises the effect to level II and cuts the duration hard. They overwrite each other: add glowstone to an extended potion and you get a short level II potion, not a long one. The chart's toggles enforce the same rule, so you can see which trade you are actually making.

Gunpowder turns any potion into a splash potion. Dragon's breath turns a splash potion into a lingering potion, which leaves a cloud on the ground for about 30 seconds and applies roughly a quarter of the drinkable duration to anything that walks through it.

Splash and lingering potions

The Minecraft splash potion recipe is the least complicated step on the chart: finish the potion, then brew gunpowder into it. Nothing about the effect changes — only the delivery. A splash potion is thrown, hits in an area, and applies less duration the further a target is from the impact point. This is also the only way to help another player or cure a zombie villager.

Lingering potions go one step further and can be crafted onward. Put one lingering potion in the centre of a crafting grid with eight arrows around it and you get eight tipped arrows, each carrying an eighth of the drinkable potion's duration — half what the lingering potion itself gives.

Trial chamber potions

Oozing, weaving, wind charged and infested are brewed from an awkward potion like everything else — with a slime block, a cobweb, a breeze rod and a plain stone block respectively. All four are harmful effects that trigger when the drinker dies or is hit, all four last 3:00, and none of them takes redstone or glowstone at all — there is no extended form and no level II. They still brew exactly this way in Java 26.3.

FAQ

What is the base for every potion?

Almost every potion starts as an awkward potion — a water bottle with nether wart brewed into it. The two exceptions are the potion of weakness, which is a water bottle plus a fermented spider eye, and the corrupted potions, which are brewed from another finished potion rather than from a base.

How do you make a splash potion in Minecraft?

Brew the potion you want first, then put gunpowder in the top slot of the brewing stand. Gunpowder works on any potion, including extended and level II ones, and it does not change the effect — only how the potion is delivered. Adding dragon's breath to a splash potion turns it into a lingering potion.

Can you use redstone and glowstone in the same potion?

No. Redstone dust extends the duration and glowstone dust raises the effect to level II, and each one overwrites the other. Whichever you brew in last is the one you keep, so a potion is either extended or amplified, never both.

What does a fermented spider eye do in brewing?

It corrupts a potion into its opposite. Night vision becomes invisibility, swiftness or leaping becomes slowness, and healing or poison becomes harming. Brewed straight into a plain water bottle it makes the potion of weakness.

How long does a brewing stand run on one blaze powder?

One blaze powder fuels 20 brewing operations. A single ingredient brews up to three bottles at once, so filling all three bottle slots costs exactly the same fuel as brewing a single potion.
