Terraria NPC Happiness Calculator
Exact 1.4.5 price modifiers, pylon checks & the game's own happiness tiers for any biome + neighbor combo — all 26 town NPCs, wiki-accurate.
Best pairings — one click, all 79–89%
1 · Pick the biome they live in
2 · Add residents — up to 4 within 25 tiles · 0/4 picked
This is a count, not a checkbox, because two different rules read it in two different directions: 4 or more cancels the solitude bonus, while the Princess needs 2 or more here (or 2+ within 25 tiles) to avoid being locked at 150%.
3 · Happiness results
The URL updates as you build — copy it to share this setup. Prices shown are what NPCs charge you; happier NPCs also pay more for what you sell them, and the Nurse's healing fee & Goblin Tinkerer's reforge costs scale the same way.
How it works
Every town NPC in Terraria has opinions: a biome they like or dislike, and neighbors they love, like, dislike or hate. Each opinion multiplies their shop prices — stack good ones and prices drop toward the 75% floor; stack bad ones and they climb toward 150%. Since 1.4.5 pylons no longer care how happy anyone is: a vendor sells that biome's pylon at any price, as long as 2+ NPCs live nearby.
Pick a biome, click NPCs to move them in (they're treated as one cluster within 25 tiles), and the calculator applies the exact 1.4.5 formula per NPC — every factor is itemized so you can see why a price is what it is.
The 1.4.5 rules this uses
| Factor | Price effect |
|---|---|
| Loved biome / each loved neighbor | ×0.88 |
| Liked biome / each liked neighbor | ×0.94 |
| Disliked biome / each disliked neighbor | ×1.06 |
| Hated biome / each hated neighbor | ×1.12 |
| Lovestruck — this NPC has the Love Potion buff (new in 1.4.5) | ×0.90 |
| Solitude — ≤2 other NPCs within 25 tiles (and ≤3 more 25–120 tiles away) | ×0.95 |
| Crowding — each neighbor past the 3rd within 25 tiles | ×1.05 each |
| Final price | clamped 75%–150%, rounded to nearest 1% |
| Changed in 1.4.5? | only the Lovestruck row — every other number above is identical to 1.4.4 |
- What 1.4.5 actually changed: not the maths. Every multiplier, both clamps, the rounding, the 25-tile radius and the 25–120 ring are identical to 1.4.4. The real changes are the new Lovestruck factor, the removal of the pylon happiness gate, and the arrival of the Underworld and Aether Pylons.
- Pylons (1.4.5): happiness no longer matters — a vendor sells their biome's pylon as long as 2+ NPCs live nearby. The Tavernkeep never sells pylons; the Guide, Nurse, Angler and Tax Collector have no shop. Sources disagree on whether "2+ nearby" means two NPCs in total or two besides the vendor — the wiki's Pylons and NPCs pages say two in total, the 1.4.5.0 changelog says two others. This page uses two in total, and won't claim more than that.
- Happiness tiers: 1.4.5 shows an icon and the exact price modifier next to a vendor's shop. Its four tiers are ≤82%, ≤100%, ≤110% and above 110%, and the S / A / B / C badges here are exactly those four — no cut points invented in between. That also means this calculator is now for planning a town before you build it, not for reading a number the game already shows you.
- Princess: no biome preferences, loves up to 3 nearby NPCs, and everyone likes her back — but she is locked at 150% unless 2+ other NPCs live within 25 tiles, or 2+ live 25–120 tiles away.
- Town pets and Town Slimes do not count as neighbors for happiness at all, even though they do count toward pylon requirements and do reduce enemy spawns. (1.4.5 raised the Party Girl's move-in requirement from 14 NPCs to 20 to account for them, which invites exactly the wrong guess.)
- Quirk: the game checks the biome you stand in while talking, not the NPC's house — shop at their home for the prices shown here.
- Underground, Cavern and Underworld still count as one biome group for preferences — that grouping did not change. The Underworld gained its own pylon in 1.4.5, but it keeps sharing the Cavern's happiness preferences.
- The Aether isn't offered as a biome here. It gained a pylon in 1.4.5, but no town NPC has any documented Aether preference on the wiki, so listing it would be an all-neutral no-op that implies a preference exists.
- Not modelled: sell prices (a happier NPC also pays more for what you sell, on a separate 114/106/94/89 scale that is not the exact inverse of the buy side), and the homeless override — an NPC with no valid house, more than 120 tiles from it, or living in the Dungeon, Corruption or Crimson is locked to 150% regardless of every factor above.
- Where this data comes from: the biome preferences and the 26-NPC roster were re-checked against the wiki for 1.4.5 and are unchanged. The per-NPC neighbour lists are the same ones the 1.4.4 build of this page used — 1.4.5's changelog contains no preference change at all, and a spot-check of five NPCs against the live wiki matched exactly, but all 26 were not re-transcribed this round.
FAQ
Which Terraria happiness rules does this calculator use?
The 1.4.5 (Bigger and Boulder) system: each loved biome or neighbor multiplies prices by 0.88, liked by 0.94, disliked by 1.06 and hated by 1.12. An NPC with 2 or fewer neighbors within 25 tiles and no more than 3 between 25 and 120 tiles gets a 0.95 solitude bonus, every neighbor past the third within 25 tiles adds a 1.05 crowding penalty, the new Lovestruck buff from a Love Potion multiplies by 0.90, and the final price is clamped between 75% and 150%, rounded to the nearest 1%. The arithmetic itself did not change in 1.4.5 — Lovestruck is the only new factor.
What does an NPC need to sell a pylon in 1.4.5?
Nothing, as far as happiness goes — 1.4.5 removed that requirement entirely. A vendor sells the pylon of the biome they are in as long as 2+ NPCs live nearby; the old 90%-or-lower threshold is gone. The Tavernkeep still never sells pylons, and non-vendors like the Guide, Nurse, Angler and Tax Collector cannot either. 1.4.5 also added Underworld and Aether Pylons, so the Underworld finally has one of its own.
What are the best NPC pairings for happiness?
Wiki-verified favorites: Goblin Tinkerer + Mechanic in Snow, Nurse + Arms Dealer in the Hallow, Dryad + Witch Doctor in the Jungle, Pirate + Angler at the Ocean, Demolitionist + Tavernkeep in the Cavern, Steampunker + Cyborg in the Desert, Guide + Zoologist + Golfer in the Forest and Truffle + Dryad in a Glowing Mushroom biome. Every one of those setups lands between 79% and 89% prices with no Love Potion involved, and they are all one click away in the presets above.
How does the Princess's happiness work?
The Princess has no biome preferences, loves up to three NPCs living nearby (×0.88 each) and is liked by every other NPC. She is locked at maximum unhappiness — 150% prices — unless at least two other NPCs live within 25 tiles, or at least two live between 25 and 120 tiles away. House her in a group of three or more.
What is the lowest price modifier an NPC can reach?
75% — the hard floor. A liked biome plus a loved neighbor plus the solitude bonus (0.94 × 0.88 × 0.95 ≈ 79%) gets close, and stacking one more liked neighbor usually hits it. A Love Potion cannot get you past it either: the game clamps the result, so Lovestruck never takes an NPC below 75%.
